Characterization and visualization of the lattice misfit associated with dislocation cores

چکیده
Atomic misfit associated with a crystal dislocation is manifested by displacements of atoms from their positions in the perfect lattice. The discrete character of the crystal lattice and the nature of interatomic bonds distribute this misfit over the plane normal to the dislocation line. The Nye tensor, which describes the distribution of the resultant Burgers vector across a plane normal to the dislocation line, provides an excellent means of describing the spatial variation of the misfit. Relevant components of the Nye tensor are calculated from atomic positions in the dislocated crystal, represented by contour plots, and contrasted with the corresponding quantities obtained from a local continuum model. The comparison demonstrates that spatial distributions of components of the Nye tensor provide an accurate and instructive means of representing dislocation core structures. A numerical integration of these distributions permits an accurate calculation of the Burgers vector without constructing a Burgers circuit. 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Visualization of dislocation dynamics in colloidal crystals.
The dominant mechanism for creating large irreversible strain in atomic crystals is the motion of dislocations, a class of line defects in the crystalline lattice. Here we show that the motion of dislocations can also be observed in strained colloidal crystals, allowing detailed investigation of their topology and propagation. We describe a laser diffraction microscopy setup used to study the g...
متن کاملStress relaxation and misfit dislocation nucleation in the growth of misfitting films: A molecular dynamics simulation study
The low-temperature growth and relaxation of misfitting films are analyzed on the basis of two-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations using Lennard–Jones potentials. The temporal evolution of the surface morphology and the mechanisms for misfit dislocation nucleation and stress relaxation are monitored. Pseudomorphic film growth is observed up to a critical thickness. In some cases, the for...
متن کاملSecond-harmonic generation from realistic film–substrate interfaces: The effects of strain
The optical second-harmonic generation from a thin crystalline film on a substrate is theoretically investigated for both s and p polarized incident light. The contributions of lattice misfit strain as well as of misfit dislocation strain to the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility are described using a nonlinear photoelastic tensor and can be separated by a polarization analysis of th...
متن کاملEquilibrium Analysis of Lattice-Mismatched Nanowire Heterostructures
The quality of lattice-mismatched semiconductor heterojunctions is often limited by the presence of misfit dislocations. Nanowire geometries offer the promise of creating highly mismatched, yet dislocation free heterojunctions. A simple model, based upon the critical thickness model of Matthews and Blakeslee for misfit dislocation formation in planar heterostructures, illustrates that there exi...
متن کاملConfigurations of misfit dislocations at interfaces of lattice-matched Ga0.5In0.5PÕGaAs heterostructures
A configuration of misfit dislocation dipoles is observed in a Ga0.5In0.5P heterostructure grown by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs. The dipole dislocations are mostly of 60° type, separated by ;3.5 nm. The dislocations are not produced by conventional lattice mismatch, rather, they could be the result of lateral compositional modulation in the Ga0.5In0.5P epilayer. © 2000 American ...
